This week’s highlights

Posted by: on Oct 14, 2011 | No Comments

It’s been a varied week, ranging from articles about dragon boat racing to learning about German financial markets.

The former, an inspirational story from a lady in her 50s who was diagnosed with breast cancer but “refused to slide into a sedentary old age”. She took up the ancient Chinese sport of dragon racing, and her team is now ranked no.2 in the world!

My other highlight of the week was an exclusive interview with the CEO of a large German business. He told me – rather frankly – that the British spend far too much time debating and dithering in meetings when they should be delivering results. Oh, I hear ya!

To round off the week, a positive conversation with a potential new client. Woop!

Beyond the office, I treated myself to three new books and dived into a new series of 24, marvelling at the ability of the writers to keep a story arc so utterly spellbinding over 24 hours of real time. Hugely impressive. My own script is now two thirds complete, and I feel rather smug about it too!

Here’s a selection of my highlights from t’internet:

  • The recession, climate change, looting – is there a seismic change afoot? Fascinating article here.
  • Charlie Brooker’s twitter campaign likening David Cameron to a lizard. My favourite RT: “I heard Cameron is actually C3PO covered in wafer thin ham.” More misanthropy and general arrogance from Charlie here.
  • BBC simplicity drive resulting in new job title ‘BBC Transformation Engagement and Simplicity Project Lead. Brilliant irony uncovered by the Guardian’s own Media Monkey
  • And finally, this rather wonderful (and toe-curlingly embarrassing) fire safety video. Push push the button…

Have a great weekend everyone!
